medical the British services

Great War in the triumphed over difficulties is shown in the third volume on the subject, forming part of the series. The Official Medical History of the Great War. This volume, like 'its predecessor, is the work of Major-General Sir W. G. Mac- pherson, the editor-in-chief of the whole series, and has official despatches, supplemented, when these were missing, with informa- tion from officers who beld administrative and other medical appointments.

It is mentioned that in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 the medical services had a strain. thrown upon them which was with- out parallel. For instance, be tween July and November 30 no fewer than 316,073 casualties were admitted to the field ayıbulances of the Fourth, Fifth, and Third Armies. No. 19 Casualty Clearing Station at Gezaincourt received as many as 5,346 in one day'alone-the twenty-four hours from 6 am, on July 2 to 6 am. on July 3-and 11,186 in the first three twenty-four hour periods of the offensive, "Yet in spite of these colossal figures— the largest in any period of the war-the medical services," it is: stated, stood the strain with persistent eheerfulness and un- diminished vigour, and very soon the machinery was working. almost automatically."

During the Battle of Arras the physical features of the country. side were turned to useful account by the ingenuity of Colonel H. N. Thompson, the. Deputy Director of Medical Services of the Vith Corps. This officer made special preparations in what he designat ed advanced diessing stations, but in reality they were equipped to perform the functions of main dressing stations, with the full resources of the field am- bulance test divisions, supple- mented by other material specially obtained. They were established by each of the divisions in caves, cellars, and þasements of buildings, protected with sandbags and overhead bursting courses, on the outskirts of the town. The chief of these was in a large subterranean cave from which stone had been excavated for building Arras in the Sixteenth Century, and inlets for stretchers were tunnelled into it from the -communication trenches. This cave, to which the pame of "Thompson's Cave" was given, was fitted with electric light and a piped water supply, "and was able to accommodate 700 wounded on stretchers in two -tiere, together with operating and` dressing rooms, kitchens, etc, Unfortunately, on April Ita large shell exploded on the top of the cave and burst the water main, causing the roof to fall in In two places, and, although no casualties were incurred, it was impossible to continue the use of the cave as a dressing station. KEA very real advance was made In the alleviation of suffering dum ing the protracted battles of Ypros płytywym berarrangementsfor Hncreatog operative surgery in the ront areas. Most people will be surprised by Sir Sydney Lee's statement, ut the meeting of the Trustees of Shakes. peare's Birthplace, that last your&&r. Dould be Jack Bywo Japan headed the list of foreign visitors (remarks the Evening Standard). I presume he counts Americans, s cousins, not as foreigners, for he goes on to say that there was one American overy four British visitors, and a higher ratio of Japanese than this would be indeed astonishing, Even so, the fact is quite unexpected, and proves agah how determined are the Japanese to learn all they can from British culture.
