SALE OF BONES FROM FRENCH BATTLEFIELDS.

The still undisturbed battle- grounds of Verdun and the Meuse furnish a profitable livelihood to ghouls who take bones from the shell-churned soil and find a market for them. They declare that it is only the bones of animals that they collect and sell, but there is an uneasy feeling among the people who dwell in the vicinity of the battlegrounds that these modern" Thenardiers" are not too scrupulous in distinguishing be- tween bones that are animal and those that are human..

The work of searching for the unburied dead on the battlefields of Eastern Franer has not yet been done with the systematic thorough- ness with which it has long since heen completed on the British front in Northern France and Flanders. It is, indeed, still being carried on, but with an inadequate number of searchers, and in what seems to the casual visitor a some- what perfunctory manner.

To this.. an English visitor to Fränce can testify from his own experience. During the Easter holiday he went to stay with a French friend who resides in the

and Varennes,

together they wandered over the outskirts of _what_was once the Arconne Forest, but is now desolate, hilly country, covered with low growth, bursting into fresh springtime green springing from the blacken-! ed stumps of shell-shattered trees. HASTILY BURIED.

Here, in the dusty chalky soil, human finger-bones can be gathered by the handful, and the remains of soldiers hastily buried on the battlefields and since unearthed by wild boars foraging for food, can still be found:

They themselves in their wander. ings came across an arm snapped of short above the wrist sticking" out of the ground. Turning over the loose dry soil they unearthed the body of a French soldier. Remnants of his dark blue tunic still clung to what remained of his borly, and red cloth to all that was left of his lower limbs, a clear in- dication that he fell in the early days of the war before the French Army was put into "sky blie."

The inhabitants of the district demand that this horrible traffic

shall be brought to as end, but that can only be effectively done by Act of Parliament, and the Chamber of Deputies will not reassemble until June--ofter the general election. The Prefect of the Meuse has, however, taken the only provisional measure that is in his power to repress the scandal. He has issued a decree forbidding a practice, which, he declares, is particularly edious both from the point of view of public order and respect for the

TO FLETCHERISE." Americans "fletcherise" their food. In. due time fletcherise" will become a legitimate dictionary

"to word, meaning

masticate thoroughly"-because one Charles Fletcher taught the value of chewing food.

To "oslerise" a person, or thing,Į is to retire it from active use, by fair means or foul. This new word sprang into being when a certain Dr. Osler was misquoted la his intention to convey the idea that men over 60 years of age should retire in favour of younger

men.

An American "burbanks" a bad situation; or an adverse condition, meaning that he makes something worth while out of nothing, or worse than nothing. This; because Luther Burbank has been able to take any old weed such as the desert cattus, and make it valuable -in this instance edible. Thus he "burbanked" it, as he did in Linnumerable other instances: at the same time giving Americans a new word.

The American permits himself to use his language, more" for its usefulness than for its purity. His spoken word, more often than not, takes the short cut. Of the slogans! Theodore Roosevelt's "big.stick;" and "gum-shoeing' (through "a situation) are good examples.
