PARIS, June 12. A meeting of the Left parties of both Chambers for the purpose of selecting a candidate for the election of a President of the Republic to-morrow resulted in ex-Premier Painleve abtaining 306 votes against 149 in favour of ex-Premier Dournergue...

The successful candidate to-morrow 'must secure an absolute majority of the votes of, the 872 Deputies and Senators who are expected to be present-Renter.

The fact that so many voted in favour of M. Doumergue is additionally significant because they did so in spite of M. Doumergue's request that his candidature should not be submitted at the meeting on the ground that it was not calculated under present circumstances to promote Republican union M. Painleve's supporters had reckoned that M. Painleve would obtain a practically unanimous endorsement and the voting means a severe blow to his hopes as M. Doumergue can count on the support of the moderate elements of both Chambers which were not represented at the meeting.

M. Doumergue is therefore at present the favourite in the race for the Presidency-Reuter.

MILLERAND IN OPPOSITION.

CLEVELAND, June 12. A prolonged demonstration for Mr. Coolidge marked the brief session of the Republican Conven- tion last night at which the platform was adopted and the planks proposed. Senator La Follette and the insurgents were rejected.

The Wisconsin Insurgents refused to participate in the voting for the platform or for Mr. Coolidge and during the demonstration remained silently in their seats ignoring the jeers, catcalls and hisses levelled at them as the other delegates formed a long queue and marched round the hall for a quarter of an hour. The Wisconsin insurgents only rose when the crowd sang the "Star Spangled. Banner."
