in the explosion at Kwong Wab ling godown. (Shamsulipa jon March 13. The jury consisted of Messrs. R. M. Fettering, Wong Chenk-kwong and. Lei Ping.
The explosion, it lind been pre- viously stated, Ipperad during thes | | handling of chlorate" of potaslı,
"The manager of the Kwong Wah Hing Co. aid that the firm had ng licence to store chlorate of. potash, as he did not know that it was dungeons and that it was neressary to obtain a permit frapa the C.S:P ----The coolies- werd in- structed to be careful in handling the goods. The potash was bought frona Camon in casks and was never bought in seeks.
¿Cross-examined by Mr. Jag d'Ainda,, witness said he had Belivered chlorate of potash in barrels and speks before and there had never been 'ah amidgut.. As soon its the goods had been taken i outside the Holown the company was no longer, responsible. The company had sold sulphur and chlorate of potash before. They hud also sold the powder mixed.
Mr. R. Paekhain, cargo siperin- tendont of the Kowloon Godown Co., who was called to give expert evidence, skid be exported and im ported many thousand casks of potassium chlorate every year. He had never handled the stuff in! sacks; it was always, in barrels. He knew of no local regulations re- quiring it to be put in barrels, but he might have used sacks, if requested, In alinost every case] the purchasor engaged coolies. to convey the stuff from the godowns to the boat, and as soon as thei goods left the godowns the respon sibility lay with the purchaser.
Mr. O. F. Lumbatti, Govern- ment analyst, wis recalled. He was of the opinion that the chlorate of potash had got mixed with sulphur or some organic dust, which would cause an explosion. He thought that down in the junk there was first fire, which raised the temperature of the chlorate of potash, thers the bugs burning allowed the potassium chlorate to mix; hence the explosion.
The fire, went on Mr. Lumbali, could have been caused either by a cigarette or somebody walking on the mixture with tailed khoon, The concussion of a heavy bag fall- ing on the loose mixture might als ignite.
The inquiry was again adjourned,
July 20.
