IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT'S STATEMENT.

(Reuter's Service.)

LONDON, May 5.

In the House of Commons Sir Kingsley Wood asked for information regarding the anti-piratical measures in Chinese waters and compensation in respect of dead and disabled British officers,

Mr. J. H. Thomas, Minister for Colonies, replied that he was awaiting a report which | would doubtlesä deal with the question of com pensation and detail the atopa' taken.

Mr. Thomas said British owners of vessels concerned had not been approached by the Colonial Office on the subject of their respon- sibility for compensation.

Captain Viscount Curzon asked whether Mr. Thomas was able to do anything to increase the use of wireless on shipt în Chinese watera."

Mr. Thomas said the difficulty was being con- sidered in all its very, wide aspects.'

[Grants are now being made by the Hongkong Government in the event of the death or disable ment of officers of ships on the Hongkong register by reason of piratical attacks, provided that in no case will a grant be made unless the Government is satisfied that the Piracy Regulations have been properly observed.

In the event of death the equivalent of two years' actual pay will be credited to the estate of the deceased, and in case of die ablements an allowance equivalent to the actual rate of wages of the injured officer will be paid so long as he is certified by a Government Medical Officer to be unfit to perform his duties, up to a maximum period of one year. This undertaking on the part of the Government is not intended to relieve Shipping Companies of their responsibilities in the matter of the insurance of their officers but is intended to supplement such arrangements as may be made by the Companies. Many shipping com panies have taken out insurance policies for their 'officers.}
