LATEST SHANGHAI SENSATION. SERIOUS ANTI-FOREIGN TROUBLE.
ALARMING SITUATION DEVELOPS.
ARMED POLICE CALLED OUT TO DISPERSE MOB. (Reuter's Pacift Service)
SHANGAI, May 2 A mild not occurred yesterday in the North Szechuen Road extension in the international settlement when a mob of 400 Chinese threatening to attack workmen engaged in pulling down a number of houses for road widening purposes were met by a squad of between 40 and 50 police.
The police were showered with bricks and a free fight ensued on the roofs of the houses concerned between the mob and the workmen. The trouble ended when the Sikh police were ordered to draw up "the ready" to frighten the rioters. This had the desired effect and the crowd was quiet for the rest of the day.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN.
(From Our Own Correspondent.}
SHANGHAI, May 1. A mob 4co Chinese created in anti-foreign disturbance in the North Szechuen Road extension this morning. A squad of forty Sikh, Chinese and foreign police turned out with rifles and bayonets. Messrs. Brandt and Rodgers own a block of Chinese houses in the Szechven Road extension. The road is owned by the Shanghai Municipal Council on either side and the Chinese site being registered at the British Consulate has nothing to do with China.
The Shanghai Municipal Council purchased the site intending to demolish the houses and widen the rond.
This was followed by a storm of indignation among the Chinese populace who contend that it is an infringement of China's sovereign ilghts. Really there is no infringement.
The mob met the house breakers who were accompanied by a handful of Settlement police. A squad of the Chinese Governor's police arrived as reinforcen ents hot eft immediately and was not seen again. The situation became ugly and reinforcements were sent for and an aimed squad arrived.
