ABSENTING THEMSELVE FROM DUTY,

In view of the controversy with j regard to the efficiency or other wise of Indian police guards, on ships, the case heard at the Marine Court yesterday is of interest.

Sham Singh and Chatter Singh, two Indian ships guards, were charged with absenting them. selves without leave on April 20 from the British ship "Bormed," the ship having proceeded to sea without them.

The Captain, Mr. Vandenbergh, said that he waited one and a half hours for the defendents. They had orders to be on board by 5 a.m. Defendants said they went ashore at eight o'clock the evening before and did not know what! time the ship sailed. At nine o'clock į they took a sampan but could not find the ship and not being able to talk Chinese they could not make the sampan people understand -86 they went ashore again and reported to the police headquarters the next morning.

Iuspector Shannon, in charge of the guards, said that the guards! were recent ones and were cx= Indian soldiers. They only arrived in the Colony on March 29 and ouring to the big demend for? guards were appointed after three. days training.

Questioned by the Marine Magistrate as to the in- structions given the guards, Inspector Shannon said that they had orders to be on board not later than two hours before sailing.
