Anxiety is felt here at the re- port that Ju Cheuk-man is to be given the command of the Klangsi troops. who are stated to be com- ing here for garrison purposes. It will be recalled that Ju is not on good terms with ex-Admiral Chan Chak whose troops are still here nominally under the command of Chan Sik-kin. 'Little can be spoken of the Kiangsi adventurers beyond a rumour they that are supposed to have been handits under the notorious" White Wolf."

There is also another report to the effect that not the Klangsi troops but General Hsu Shung-chi is due here. At any rate, there are whispers of the soldiers who have 1ound a hunting-ground here preparing to resist any trespassing on their pastures and to surround the newcomers if they do come. If any fighting docs eventuate it will not be the military who will be hurt but the civil population.

Hitherto the gambling monopoly has been run by local militarists who appropriate the revenues (a few thousand dollars a day) for their own expenses. Canton has given the monopoly to another merchant so that they can receive the revenues direct. Protests are being made from Kongmoon daily by the local commanders who claim that without the gambling revenues' they cannot pay their way. At any rate, the new monopolist has not been permitted to commence operations yet.

It has been ascertained that the pirate craft which attacked the Canton-Kongmoon ferry-boat "Ping On and took about fifteen persons away for ransom, is the "Sun Hon," formerly a genboat attached to the Kongmoon Anti- Piracy Bureau.. A few days ago, a fire broke out at Kangmoon and in the excitement the gunboar's crew was driven ashore, the captors disappearing with the boat. At the time it was thought that some other military faction had merely "borrowed" gunboat and it came as a surprise

to learn that it had been mandeered" by pirates.
