THE RIGHT TO DIE.
CORONER'S VIEWS ON SUICIDE.
Surprise is expressed by London coroners at the statements by Mr. G. E. Royal, the Scarborough coroner, at an inquest on a woman who was said to have practically starved herself to-death Mr. E Royle said:
So far as human law is cos: cerned, people have a right to commit suicide. I object 10 people being charged with at tempting to commit suicide. Mr. Reginald Kemp, coroner for Western Middlesex, sald:
It is a very startling proposition and one that cannot be upheld. We have enough suicides as it is without encouraging people to commit suicide.
Major W. H. Whitehouse, coroner for South-Eastern London, said:
People have no right to commit suicide, not even where human law Is concerned.
Mr. Royle said:
If what you do does not injure public health, it is not a public matter. This woman wanted to dic. She wished to turn her face to the wall and be left alone. The burden of life might have been too great for her. Who has anything to do with it but her and the Almighty?
