LONDON, April 7, In the House of Commons the Government was defeated on the Evictions Bill by 221 to 212 yotes.

LATER. Mr. Ramsay Macdonald made it clear he does not contemplate resignation in consequence of the Government's defeat.

IRONICAL CHEERS.

: Mr. MacDonald who received an ovation from the Labour members, said this emergency measure was necessitated by the alarming increase of evictions in industrial towns where unemployment was rife. Some were due to the Act passed by the late Government. Very unseemly scenes were occurring aud still more unseemly scenes were probable. It was the Government's intention in the House to shape the Bill ia committee. The Govern- ment would gladly.co-operate in relieving property- owners of a burden which the community should. share.

Mr. MacDonald admitted amid ironical cheers that it was a hurried bill pressed upon the Govern- ment when its hands were uncomfortably full.

Mr. MacDonald's speech was greeted with Opposition laughter, and ironical cheers, interrup- tions demanding Mr. MacDonald to clarify the position as regards the source of relief to such extent that the Speaker Intervened saying that these were unfair to the Prime Minister."

Mr. Stanley Baldwin, Leader of the Opposition, said the Government would be well-advised to drop its futile and unhappy clause until the Government knew what it wanted to do.

He had not the remotest idea of the Govern- ment's proposals to postpone the incidence of the cost of relief to a vague and remote readjustment of local imperial burdens. It was trifling with the House (Loud Opposition and Liberal cheers),

SECOND DEFEAT.

The Government sustained a second defeat at to-night's session when Mr. Graham, Financial Secretary of the Treasury submitted a resolution to validate certain wartime charges-by-Government- Departments in connection with the control of supplies and prices of certain commodities.

Sir Douglas Hogg moved an amendment, of which the effect was to withhold validation of charges in respect of certain milk contracts.

The amendment was carried by 207 to 170. votes and the amended resolution was adopted

General Smuts, announcing the dissolution, said the Government was doubtful after the Wakkerstroom election whether it still enjoyed the confidence of the country which was essential to carry out its policy.

General Hertzog said he was sure the public would welcome the opportunity of expressing its

views.

Mr. Creswell speaking amid an uproar of cheers and counter cheers, declared the Labour members accepted the Government's challenge, confident that the people would reject the present Government.

SENSATION IN LONDON.

LONDON, April 7.

The postponement of the Prince of Wales' visit to South Africa has caused a sensation in London where the postponement is surmised to be due to the possibility that any function arranged in the hondir of the Prince might be turned to political account by one, or other of the parties fighting the election.

General Smuts' decision to dissolve Parliament is believed to be a strategic move to rally the electors in support against the Dutch Nationalist and Labour combination.

ROME, April 7. The election results hitherto show 1,437,000 votes for the Government and 823,000 for the other parties.

The Catholic Popular Party heads the latter section with 242,000. The Unitary Socialists have 158,000; the Maximalists 150,000; the Communists 87,000; and the Republicans 39,000.

It is estimated that 62 per cent, of the voters

polled.

The Fascists hitherto have a 64 per cent. majority, whereas only a 25 per cent. majority is required by the electoral law to secure the return of the Government list of candidates.

Even in a former Socialist stronghold-like- Milan more than 50 per cent. voted for the Govern ment. Rome gave the Fascists a majority. LATEST LABOUR TROUBLE
