RED SNOW.

ONCE REGARDED WITH ALARM,

The report, from Sweden that red snow has fallon thickly over a considerable area in the Halmstad district is very interesting. It is now some years since such a fall took place on the Silvrette Glacier in the Alps; and there have been over 500 instances of blood-snow or rain recorded in Homer, in the Old Testament, and down through the centuries. As a matter of-fact, in days gone by the phenomenon of coloured snow was viewed with superstitious alarm.

THE CHINA MAIL.

And yet there is no such thing as coloured snow. Snow is only and always white! Indeed, snow the ultimate standard of whiteness; We never expect to see anything whiter than snow. When we hear of red snow in 'Sweden or Switzer" land or elsewhere, we are to under- stand that the colouring is a for- eign element introduced when the snow is falling. And that leads us, to inquire whence the red or other colour originally comes."

WHAT CAUSES THE COLOUR, Our knowledge of the pheno- menon of red snow is mainly due to the exhaustive researches made by Ehrenberg, who obtained samples of such snow that fell in different places and countries. He found that the colouring matter was of a uniform composition, and must therefore be assumed to come from the Game sources. The samples all contained American organisms, and he concluded that the dust was blown by the trade winds over to Africa and Europe, and occasionally even to Asia.

On the West Coast of Africa blood rain is a frequent pheno- menon, and the colouring matter' is found to be this trade wind dust; and in Northern Africa and the Mediterranean countries from

Spain, across Italy, and as far East as Armenia, it has occasionally been experienced?

"Ehrenberg himself admits that in the samples of red snow : or rain he had examined there were particles of cosmic or other origin whose source he did not know. Thus, ip the sediment from specimen from Siberia there were among other particles, I silica- alge,,differing so much from the ordinary, trade wind dust that it night reasonably be regarded as surface dust that had been whirled up from the distant Khirgese steppes.

ORGANIC AND COSMIC ELEMENTS.

Altogether Ehrenberg, in Is specimens of red snow, found 460 different kinds of organic remains, and of these 194 were comparativė“ ly complete alge and infusoria. Certainly the most of these were dead, but many of them were quite uninjured and could 1827. doubtedly have lived had they fallen in a favourable environment. These tiny atoins, especially living organisms, which аге curried about by the air currents, are attracting. Increasing attention have and interest. Physicists shown that sunlight can exercise pressure on minute bodies. that, hover freely, 80 that they can be carried away by the bearing of light. In the atmosphere itself; the resistance of the air is a hindrance, but in space they can move with the rapidity of light..

The famous Swedish physicist Arrhenius has shown that minute particles which have a magnitude of 0.0003-0,0002 mm. (there are bacterla and other organisms, still smaller) and which are carried high up into our atmosphere by the air-currents,. can be laid hold of by the pressure of the light rays and carried through space.
