LONDON, March 17. The phrase "government according to the Sermon on the Mount" did yeoman service in the House of Commons discussion on the Army Estimates when the Labour member Mr. Ayles moved a reduction in the gross personnel of 101,000

by 150,000.

The amendment was supported by several other Labour members but it was finally rejected by

347 to 13 votes.

Mr. Ayles declared the amendment was in. tended as a protest against the militaristic trend of Army policy. He stated that a nation brave enough to lay down its arms midst an armed world would be the only safe nation. #

Numerous Labour members, however, eloquent- ly opposed the resolution, notably Col. John Ward, who drew cheers by stating that the man who did not 'defend the grand old country was unworthy of the name of Englishman.
