One of the most remarkable birth tangles on record is now being unravelled by the Brazilian Courts, a sum of £200,000 being involved in the question as to which of two twin babies was born first. Fernando Jose da Costa, a wealthy mine owner left his fortune uncon- ditionally and absolutely to his first (unborn) grandchild. Two months after his decease the parents of the expected child' quarrelled violently and separated, legally agreeing that if the expected baby proved to be a boy the father should have possession of the infant, but that if it were a girl it should be brought up by the mother. Twins were born, a boy and a girl, and the mother alleged that the female child was born first. The father, however, brought witnesses to prove that the first child born was a boy. He alleges that his wife has made a deliberate mis-statement in order that she may have the control of his father's money. Two doctors were present at the birth, and whereas one swears positively that the elder child was a boy, the other is equally certain that it was a girl. Our photograph shows Fernando Jose da Costa (left) and his sister Maria.
