LONDON, February 37. The report of the Imperial Wireless Committee recommends that the Post Office should own and operate all Empire wireless stations in Britain' alternatively. An exception should be made in the case of Canada and the existing competition between the Post Office and the Anglo Canadian Wireless Service should be continued, subject to the safeguarding of public interests in any licence granted the Anglo-Canadian Service.

In any licence granted to a private company the State must reserve the right to take possession or to exercise control of the stations in emergency.

LA Mrs. Davey, of Hammersmith, threw herself over the tower of Westminster Cathedral, together with her two little daughters. She is said to have left a note to her husband saying she was tired of life.]

17,534: (Mr. Arthur Henderson, Home Secretary in Mr. Ramsay MacDonald's Government, was born in Glasgow in 1863. He served his apprenticeship as a moulder in Newcastle. In 1903 he entered the House of Commons as member for Barnard Castle, Durham, member for the Widnes division, and from 1922-3 represented Newcastle East. He lost his seat at the last election. Mr Henderson has served on many Government and public committees and Royal Commissions. He was a member of the Government during part of the war, member Cabinet War Committee 1916-17, of the and of the Government Mission to Russia in 1917. in which year he and Mr. Lloyd George, quarrelled. Mr. Henderson, who was made a Frivy Councillor in 1915, is a Wesleyan and an abstainer. Two of his sons entered Parliament at the recent election.]

GERMANY AND THE LEAGUE

BERLIN, February 28.

In view of Mr. MacDonald's recent statement, it is noteworthy that the Foreign Minister Herr, Stresmann, in a speech delivered in the Reichstag, declared the government had not rejected in principle the idea of entering the League of Nations, but had not received an invitation from a responsible quarter.

Herr Stresemann further siressed the necessity of guaranteeing full and unconditional rights if membership in the League were extended to Ger- many, including membership of the Council.

WASHINGTON, February 28.

The Senate Emigration Committee has decided to recommend the retention of the census of 1910 as the base for the allocation of immigration quotas, but has favoured the reducing of the percentage admitted from three to two per cent of the 1910 total.

BERLIN, February 27. Herr Ebert, the President, has decreed the raising of the military state of emergency, and the removal of restrictions on personal liberty and the freedom of the press, and public open air meetings. Processions, however, are prohibited.
