NIAGARA FALLS.

EXTENSION OF THE SCENIC TUNNEL

The receding of the waters of Niagara River has made it neces sary for the Queen Victoria Park Commission to extend its scenic- tunni under the falls a distance of 150 feet. Orders for this work At the are being called now. present time the last porthole 'on the tunnel at Table Rock is just at the edge of the falls. The water- fall at this point is small, so that the visitors do not realize the volume of water Rowing overthe falls.

With the extension of the tunnel, the last porthole, which will make the tunnel an additional one hundred and eighty feet in length, will be under the centre of the waterfall:

Suggestions have been made that action should be taken to preserve the scenic beauty of the falls, especially of the Horseshoe Falls. The breaking down of the crest line has been continuous, until the greater portion of the descent is now concentrating with- in a V-shaped channel at the toe of the horseshoe.

In any programme for com- memorating the coming centenary of Byron's death Mr. John Murray, the publisher, must have a sub stantial share. I have seen a good many of the interesting things in his Byron collection (says a writer in the London Evening News), and, of course, the House of Murray, still at the old address in Albemarle Street, is one of the best preserved Byron landmarks in London. Byron was a great Londoner, and as a man about town there were few hotels and clubs in the West End that he did not know. He used to recall how as a member of the Cocoa Tree Club in St. James's' Street he and three friends sat from six in the evening till five next morning, and after having clareted and champagned, finished with a kind of Regency punch |
