RACING CARNIVAL
DRIER WEATHER FOR OFF" DAY.
To-day at Happy Valley was the "off" day of the 1924 racing Inplaced ponies
f'ommission carnival or, in other words, the day of the "also-rans." It pro mised to be also the driest day of the whole meeting and the course this morning appeared to have considerably improved. The wen. ther, however, was still dull and the morning air held a touch of
rawness.
Most of the Shanghai jockeys Jeft for home by the specially delayed "Empress of Australia" yesterday evening and to-day the struggle lay between local riders. With optimism unshattered by the vicissitudes of the first three days', "punters" came along with renewed enthusiasm, confident, either, as the case might be, of making up for past indiscretions or of adding to wins made earlier in the meeting.
ין
THE LUCKY ONE.
Yesterday we gave the names of the two Chinese gentlemen "who had jointly drawn the second prize in the Jockey Club's Cham- pions Cash Sweep, the holder. of the winning ticket not having presented himself for payment.

As Itis most probable that what- ever results of the Races have been obtained, a word on Intensification will not be out, of place, and the most important point in this connection is to see that the negatives to be inten- sified are thoroughly washed.
The correct way to wash nega tives, or papers does not seem to be thoroughly understood out here. In many cases, and this." applies to professionals as well as amateurs, to place the plates, fims or papers imo a dish of clean water, let them soak for several hours, changing the water three or four times seems to be under- stood as suficient. Again. I have seen films and prints put in a dish with water from a tap running into it. This again is not correct. It must be remembered that the whole idea of washing is to re- move chemicals used in develop- Oing and fixing; also that chemi- cals always sink to the bottom of the dish or banks.

Therefore water running into a dish say two or three inches high, and overflowing over the side, will probably not affect the chemicals, which with the prints have sunk to the bottom and the water never gets in between the prints or films or disturbs the chemicals at the bottom. Con sequently the only correct way to wash. plates and films is have them fixed separately, and to so regulate the water running in from a tap at the top that it will always keep the tank or dish foll, while a hole should be made at the bottom so that the chemicals and dirty water can be drained off. The only successful way to wash prints is to have water sun- ning into a dish and take the prints out of a second dishone by one putting them into the first dish containing the running water. When No. 2 is empty this should be rinsed and then the water allowed to run into it and the. prints changed into the dish containing the clean running water. This process repeated a dozen times is much more effective than soak- ing for a whole day.
If negatives or films are thorough ly, washed, they will never become stained during intensification or any other process.
