because of the social amenities | Pari-mutuel :-- associated with it, and the Cham- pion Stakes were the two big items set down on the programme for the third day of the 1924 racing carnival. The attendance during the morning was smaller than usual. This was probably attributable to the fact that just across the road a huge crowd was filing into the Roman Catholic Cemetery to be present at the late Bishop Pozzon's funeral. The procession was so big that it held up the tram traffic for some

time..

One remarkable feature of the racing so far has been that," des- pite dolorous predictions on the subject, everything has happened pretty well as it would have hap- pened if the course had been in perfect condition instead of the miry mess it was when the first race started this morning.

Messrs. Stephen and Stitt's Cock o' the North was almost as strongly fancied for the Cham- plons this morning as Courtfield was yesterday for the Derby. The Derby winner was bracketed with Sunshine Dahlia as a good thing for second place.
