DOCKERS' STRIKE OVER.
OFFICIAL STATEMENT.
GRAVE SITUATION AVERTED.
TROUBLE IN IRELAND.
(Reuter's General Service.)
LONDON, February 21.
"It is officially announced that the dock strikőj is settled.
EARLIER CABLES
LONDON, February 20: The Dockers' strike has spread to Ireland. Following instructions from London, the dockers at Belfast declined to discharge ships from Britain and the dockers at Londonderry went on strike.
LONDON, February 20. Meetings of members of the Stevedores' Union at Poplar and Canningtowa unanimously decided} to cease work.
The National Stevedores' Union did not join the rival Transport Workers' Union. They declar ed instead a stay-in" strike, continuing work during port hours only, from eight o'clock in the morning till. five o'clock in the evening, for five days in the week; and from eight o'clock in the morning till noon on Saturday; and going slow on piece work, with no overtime. The Stevedores'). Union claims to have 20,000 members in the Port of London and to respresent all stevedores and lighter men and fifty per cent. of the dockers.1.
CLASH OVER WAGES.
LONDON, February 20. At the enquiry Mr. Bevin pointed out that the dockers had unwillingly accepted reductions totalling 6s. daily since 1921, because they were fighting to establish national agreements to abolish casual labour which was a social disgrace. Their present claim was for a reversion to the wages paid in 1922:

Mr. Bevin asserted that many employers did not give permission to reject the claim. Indeed hundreds of companies wanted to pay the increase.
Sir Norman Hill, on behalf of the shipowners, contended that the wages reductions were necessary in consequence of bad trade. While freights had fallen, working expenses had not diminished Many shipowners had abandoned hope of ever making. profits.
The Chairman' said the strike must be settled without delay. The court hoped to report to the Minister of Labour on February 22. The court then adjourned.
LONDON, February 20.
The road transport commercial group rom mittee has requested the national strike committee to instruct the road transport workers to strike.
RAY OF HOPE.
LONDON, February 20. Port employers met to-night with the object of bringing the Liverpool employers into line with the rest of the ports as regards the new offer by the employers, which it is confidently, expected will form the basis of a setlenment if it is agreed upon. When the meeting concluded, after a long ses sion, no statement was made, but such is possible when the court of enquiry resumes to-morrow.
[An earlier cable stated that a Court Enquiry into the dock dispute, presided over by Mr. Holman Gregory, accompanied by Mr. H. Boothman (Secretary of the Association of Operative Cotton Spinners) and Sir Andrew Duncan (Vice-President of the Shipbuilding Employers' Federation) was opened publicy at the Law Courts yesterday mom ing. Neither of the disputants briefed counsel. Mr. Ernest Bevin, opening for the dockers, said he did not propose to call witnesses, but he desired the Court to call witnesses from the other side. Sir? Norman Hill, Vice-President of the Chamber of Shipping, was present representing employers.]. · FRANCE'S MATCH MONOPOLY.
PARIS, February 20.
The Chamber of Deputies by 355 to 215 votes has rejected the Socialist amendment cancelling article thirty-six of the Government's financial pro- posals which provides for the disposal of the State match monopoly.

WILL NOT RESIGN.
WASHINGTON, February 20. It is understood that Republican senators during the last few hours have been increasingly pressing for Mr. Daugherty's resignation.
Mr. Daugherty, in a brief conference with the President, reaffirmed his determination not to resign under fire. He then returned to the Department of Justice, where he dictated a statement affirming his decision to stay in the Cabinet.

Upon the heels of the publication of Mr.. Daugherty's statement, Senators Lodge and Pepper proceeded to the White House to acquaint the Pre- sident with the growing sentiment of the Senate in favour of Mr. Daugherty's retirement.--
RUBBER ROADS.
DRAWBACKS NOW OVERCOME;
INDUSTRY'S PROSPECTS,
LONDON, February 20.
In a paperiread before the Royal Society o. Arts on the new uses of rabber, Mr. P. J. Burgess* Chairman of the Rubber. Growers Association, suggested that Ceylon-tea-planters-might experi ment in waterproofing tea chests with rubber latex, instead of leadfoll.
He anticipated that crepe rubber soles would become the standard equipment for all boots and shoes, but crepe rubber must be plantation finished and the retail price of such footwear must be reduced equal to or less than leather soled boots, and the liability of the rubber sole to slip in wet weather must be overcome,
The difficulty of obtaining satisfactory.adhe- sion of the Rubber Road block to its base appeared to have been solved,
Mr. Burgess expressed the opinion that the use of large blocks would overcome the remaining difficulties of rubber road construction, which was the only direction in-which he saw Hope of solving. the chief rubber problem, namely of finding a use for rubber on a big scale which would function as a practicable proposition with raw rubber at some pivotal price, say Is. 6d. per-lb..
