DOCKERS STRIKE SURPRISE.
RIVAL UNIONS. CLASH.
NEW “STAY-IN" STRIKE POLICY.
"HANDS OFF LONDONI"
PREMIER'S POSSIBLE. MEDIATION.
(Reuter's General Service)
LONDON, February 17. A surprise move in the dock strike to-day was the decision of the National Stevedores' Union in favour of a "stay-in" strike. The union is the rival organisation to the Transport Workers' Union. It claims to have 20,000 members in the Port of London and to represent all stevedores and lighter- men and fifty per cent. of the dockers.
The members of the stevedores' executive have declared that as a result of this policy there will be more chaos in the Port of London in forty-eight hours than had the Union struck, and they will speedily obtain recognition,

WASHINGTON, February-17. Senator Greene has been operated on and the splintered bone has been taken out of his skull.
His condition is serious but the physicians are hopeful of his recovery.~;
[While walking on Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, in the company of his wife, Senator Greene of Vermont was wounded in the head during a duel between prohibition agents and bootleggers. He was conveyed to hospital. The bullet which struck Senator Greene did not remain in his head. It caused a slight fracture in the region of the frontal bone.]

It is reported that the selectors have recom;

He added that negotiations were not yet all over and said he believed the Minister of Labour and the Prime Minister were moving in the direction of bringing ebont au sgreement among all parties.
The policy the Steredores' Union proposed was quite new in industrial strife. and he hoped they would carry it out, for at least the first three days in the week after which if it became necessary the policy could be changed.

LONDON, February 17. The National Strike Committee in a bulistin says that reports from all districts are splendid." The men are determined everywhere.
The delegates' conference's decision has been honoured in all ports. Where safety men have been allowed to continue work, they may only do so as long as blacklegs are not introduced..

THE "STAY IN" STRIKE.
LONDON, February 17.. The last meetings took place in London to-day of the National Stevedores and Lightermen's Union which decided to adopt a policy of a "stay in strike, continuing work during port hours only, from eight o'clock in the morning till five o'clock in the evening, for five days in the week; and from eight o'clock in the morning till noon on Saturday; and to go slow on piece work with no overtime.

In the event of the strike extend-" ing to include all workers of allied unions, a total of 1,200,000 workers would become affected. Later cables stated that the only fresh development in the dockers' dispute was that the London employers had issued a notice that from February 18, all employes' wages would be increased one shilling per day on a half daily basis."
