The Price of a Flute...

The British flute (says the Educational Times) is by the common consent of players con- sidered far superior to any of its rivals. The price of a first-class British concert flute varies between £25 and £40. No doubt to the ignorant this figure appears high, but it has to be remembered that a flute is a lasting possession and may be handed down from father to son. The wearable parts are the keys and fittings, which can be renewed and must indeed be fre- quently repaired and adjusted...

Living on Publicity.

Sandgate Urban District Council is still Jamenting the loss of the Sandgate postmark consequent upon its postal business being worked from Folkeste, and in an interview with Major Wright, postmaster of Folkestone, on this and other postal matters, the mem- bers expressed themselves in strong terms. Councillor Donovan Bayley asked if it had occurred to the postmaster that seaside towns depended upon. publicity. postmaster said letters stamped by machine and a special selection of Sandgate letters could not be made. He promised to represent the whole matter to the Postinaster-General;--

Miss Rachael Mainprize, tho invalid daughter of a Yorkshire; farmer, has been delighted to re- ceive a letter from the Prince of Wales thanking her for a poem | which she had written in meniory of his visit to Canada, Miss Mainprizd, who is 17 and lives at Buckton, composed the poem, and sent it to a friend. This friend, unknown to her, posted it to the Prince. The poem is entitled To the Prince who wins all- hearts," and ends as follows:

Mayest thou a true helpmate

find,

A gracious woman in heart and

To comfort and keep and cheer

And make thy life one glad-

THE CHINA MAIL.

A dressmaker who is known for her charming notions in bridal and bridesmaids' gowns is providing all the bouquets to go with her confections (a Star writer tells us.) These are made on the tight, round lines of the Victorian posy, but the flowers are of silk and the leaves of velvet. The bride carries a little bouquet of silk blossoms in white and palest rose pink, the bridesmaids!⚫ have similar bunches of lavender and Wedgwood-blue blossoms, while the bride's mother carries a rather larger bunch, composed of flowers in shades, of burnt orange and lemon yellow." Not only do these bouquets look delightful, but they can be utilised later for hat and frock triramings. An excell- ent wrinkle for the clever amateur.

Does Petrol Come From Fish?

According to Professor J. N. Macfarlane, of the University of | Pennsylvania, the true source of the world's petroleum lies in the numberless schools of fish that swim the ocean. The mossbunker, a small fish which exists in enormous shoals, may be one of the principal sources of supply if; the professor's theory be correct. One of Professor Macfarlane's associates, Professor Baird, has estimated that in one year the mossbunker's enemies (bluefish. and other such fish) devour at least a quintillion, of them. Some idea of what a quintillion means may be grasped by looking at the number written" in figures:- 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. If a mass like this were suddenly, destroyed and heat and pressure applied as might easily happen during a volcanic eruption, the ofl in the." fish would be extracted and under the proper geological conditions, covered with the volcanic detritus, would in time become, petroleum. The process of the fish-vil Into conversion of petroleum has been approximated at Harvard University, where fish- oil, with an addition of lime, was subjected to terrific heat. These experiments indicated, at least, that such a metamorphosia was possible. If Professor Macfarlane's. thebry be correct, the world will not have to worry about the ex- haustion of its petroleum, supply All that will be necessary will ba the discovery of the other beds of oll-beáring shale wäich have been formed since the beginning, I time.
