After the reading of the school report by Mr. Petrus Lei, the Headmaster, Mr. R. A. D. Forrest complimented the Lai Hoo School on the high standard of efficiency shown. He said he was pleased to hear from the report that for the last ten years the school had progressed steadily and he hoped that it would continue to 60. He was also glad to hear that an attempt would be made to secure a more commodious building, for two reasons, the first of which was that in visiting the Printing, Doreloping etc. undertaken school, he had formed the impres-

sioa that the building was Kowloon.

worthy of the work and energy of the staff. The second reason was that it bigger building was secured many boys who had been refused admission would get the benefit of Mr. Lei's instruction.

INWARD MAILS.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30. U.S.A. Canada, Japan and Sboughai

The following was the report:--- It is with the greatest of pleasure that I am able to report another year of successful work, despite so many changes in the teaching staff. We have, a staff of seven full-time and two part-time masters, all of whom have worked arduously and I desire to thank them for their hearty and efficient co-operation. The enrolment for 1923 was 347, as against 317. in the previous year, showing an increase of 30 pupils. The average daily attendance for the year was 237; the number of school-days was 326. This number is as big as the present school-house can accommodare, as there is sufficient space for only 350 when filled to its utmost capacity. On account of this limitation of space, scores of pupils had, from time to time, to be refused admission. Ten years have elapsed since the school was instituted'; but it is only in its infancy. There are now nominally nine classes, Class 3 being the high- est and Class 8C., the lowest.. No attempt is being made to start the Junior and senior classes. This cannot be accomplished unless a much bigger and a more suitable building is secured and unless the staff is greatly strengthened by: the addition of many capable and Samaki and Wachow Experienced teachers. For the Holo time being, I have the satisfaction Bangkuk to know that, at any rate, a sound foundation is being laid.

TELE TEACHING OF ENGLISH, As regards the teaching of the English language, boys who en- tered under 14 years of age took up A good English tone, but those who began their studies over 20 rarely acquired a correct accent. Just as in many of the schools in the in- terior of China where English is included in the curriculum, some of the students in the advanced classes understand the rules of grammar fairly well and can even write well, but they are invariably unable to answer in correct Eng- lish even the plainest questions put to them. This is because they have not had sufficient practice in conversation. Every means has. been adopted to impress upon the boys that in learning a modern language, the principal thing is to be able to speak it, and much time has therefore been devoted to colloquial and conversation.

The most significant thing I wish to mention about the school under my management was the enforcing of discipline.. Throughout the year, no important rule of the school was broken and no serious breach of discipline of the class
