DIOCESAN BOYS' SCHOOL,

ANNUAL REPORT.

STRIKING RESULTS.

COURAGEOUS COMMENT.

(Below are given salient points In the annual report

of the Diocesan Boys' School, compiled by the Headmaster, Rev. WT Featherstone, M. A. and submitted at the Annual Speech day yester day, To give the report in full would probably deter readers from spending time in perusing a docn- ment that is full of interest, and not a little courageous. The impres- sion gained from a full reading of the Report is one of a school life with discipline; or a "live wire with discipline; and that the school la destined to play yet an even bigger part in the educational life

The successes in the examina- tions are due (1) To the united efforts of an excellent Staff, to the English Introduction of Teachers in the lower classes, and to Teacher taking special subjects in several classes instead of taking one class in all subjects, (2) To a strong feeling of esprit de carps in the school from Class 8 to Class (3) To making boys decide about their entries for the Examinations,

The Capitation and Examination Grants should be abolished. When there are Building and Equipment Grants it should not be possible for Schools to spend their balances, made up largely by Capilation and Examination Grants, on buying land and putting up buildings; the money should be voted for and spent on a specific purpose...

In addition to the Building and the Colony, and perhaps

Equipment Grants there should be China, than it has yet done.]

annual report of

this school I have great pleasure in reporting that this year we have taken a new step and for the first time in our history we have as principal visitor and speaker to-day an Old Boy in the person of the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotewall. Our delight at your presence to-day, Sir, is increased by the knowledge of the honour which has, during 1923, been conferred upon you in being appointed one of the Re presentatives of the Chinese on the

The Examination Grants should not encourage schools to put boys into Classes 1 and 2 and thus in- crease their grant by the number of candidates presented (not passed). There should be no Examination Grants and boys should pay their own entrance fees.

Legislative Council of this Colony, We are also pleased at the great interest you have shown in many ways in Education and trust that your efforts on behalf of our New School will meet with the success they deserve. As a codclusion to this introductory paragraph may say that we hope that many boys and Old Boys will copy your example in the great interest you take in public affairs for the we fare of the community, in energy ond in business acumen."

Scripture. Religion, Church. In 1923 all boys were prepared for Scripture in the University Examinations. Our results in the examinations in Scripture are not satisfactory but it is hard to find out what the examiners want and especially 50 as there has been such a variety of examiners in. I make these suggestions as Headmaster of a School which has attended the Cathedral re gularly for very many years and which is one of the oldest schools in the Far East at which Chinese have been educated.

In Hongkong there is too strong a distinction made between the the Colonial Work which has Cathedral as its Parish Church and
