This is the Essex County Jail, at Newark, N. J., where Charles L. Craig, Comptroller of the City of New York, must serve a term of 60 days under a sentence imposed upon him by Federal Judge Julius L Mayer, who charged him with contempt of court. The contempt charged was rontained in a letter written by Mr. Craig about the Judge's decisions in matters pertaining to transit affairs in which the City of New York was interested.

Mrs. Theresa Gamble Conover, former wife of a major in the United States Army, has led suit in New York City, for divorce, nam- ing his second wife as co-respondent. Major Conover secured a divorce from his first wife in Pennsylvania; but she alleges that divorce is not legal in New York.

Her gallant fight for life and her pitiful plea for a wrist-watch, which led newspapermen to give her a pretty gold one, have attracted the at tention and the prayers of the whole State. Her mother, a poor seamstress, was forced by the land- lord to give up her room because of the publicity, and the dying girl was carried a neighbouring home, where a kindly landlady cares for them. Medical science can do nothing, but the girl, firmly re-. ligious, is dying happily, surrounded by scores of gifts from unknown friends. She prayed only to be allowed to live until her birthday.
