BRITISH NAVAL DISASTER.

It transpires that there was quite a chapter of accidents at Portland, including a collision between two K submarines, with the smashing of one's bows and serious damage to the other, while the battleship "Ramilies" struck the breäkwater.

According to one account the submarine disaster occurred during a combined subriarine attack on the Atlantic Fleet as it was leaving

port.

The "L14" carried fourteen live mines.

It is officially stated that "L 24" has not yet been definitely located, She sank without leaving a sign and her whereabouts are only known approximately.

Minesweepers resumed the search at daybreak, and it is stated an object has been touched which may be the "L 24,"bat the weather is deadagainst attempts at location, There is but very slight tupe of rescuing the crew, assuming that they are still alive. Half a gale is blowing and a rough sea makes it impossible for divers to descend. Thirty fathoms is about the maxi. mum depth at which divers can work, and then only under favour. able conditions.

A private Adminity Court 'In- quiry into the disaster has been opened aboard the "Resolution."

It is learned that the difficulty in locating the submarine is increas ed by the fact that the shock felt by the Resolution was so slight that it was not realised that a collision had occurred until the conclusion of the exercises, when the submarine failed to appear; but the slightness of the impact is the principal reason for hoping that the crew may be still alive.

His Majesty The King sent a message to the Admiralty saying that he was shocked and grieved to hear of the disaster, deploring the loss of gailant lives and requesting the conveyance of his heartfelt sympathy to the families.

SEPARATIST TRAGEDY.

PARIS. January 30th Advice, from Mayence state that as a result of the assassination of Heintz, the representative of the Rhineland High Commission has prohibited entry into the Pala- tinate by non-residents from unde cupied Germany, and has or dered the

Rhine closing of bridges, except at Ludwigshaven and Mannheim.

Curfew has been imposed at Speyer, and all meetings forbid- den.

The death of one of those who were wounded at Speyer makes the number of victime six.

Advices from Coblence state that the Occupation Authorities, owing to the imminent danger of a fresh Senaratist revolt, have re- armed the German police.

Separatists have strengthened their garrison at Castle Coblenco.

AIR CRAFT SURVEY WORK.

LONDON, January, 10,

A number of Air Force officers are being attached to the air station at Plymouth for the purpose of organising a development flight in connection with the aircraft carrier "Pegasus," which is going to the East ladies in February for survey work.

It is believed that a certain amount of survey work at Sing- apore will be carried out, and that aircraft flight will be used to assist by photographic and other survey, ing from the air, for the proposed naval base.
