of the human mind. What is it that makes the great majority off men in their better moments dis like secret and mysterious deflings? What is it that makes a frank and open hearted character so popular? It would appear to be a deep-rooted instinct that in the long run it is better to have everything above board. It is this instinct which drives men to confession--not necessarily by any means to con- fession as understood by the Church but to a confession that reveals itself very often in an. an- xiety that their fellowmen should not think too well of them. Mosi people prefer to be underestimated, so that they may feel them- selves to possess a hidden credit, than to be overestimated and harbour the conviction that they have a hidden debit. It is the hypocrite who wishes to be taken at more than his trueï value, and by the majority he is regarded as a despicable character. Now Chris tian teaching meets this instinct half way. It promises that there shall be a complete unvailing. The hidden springs of character shall be revealed; the innermost motives, shall be made manifest; men shall stand in so fierce a light that noth- ing shall be hidden. This advent truth, if taken seriously, becomes of very real help. It acts, like a tonic on a character that desires to get rid of all secrecy and deceit. It helps to keep men straight when the temptation comes to walk along crooked paths.
