RECALCITRANT MAGISTATES,
· (From Our Own Correspondent.)
KONGMOON, Dec. 10. Apparently Sun Yat-sen's sub- ordinates at present acting as district magistrates in the vicinity of Kongmoon, are taking a leaf out of their leader's book. The Generalissimo has expressed his intention of withholding the Cus- toms revenue and the magistrates, whose business it is to remit local taxes, &c., to Canton, are not doing "so but are applying the funds to their own use, Orders are stated to have been givea for the removal of the magistrates at Heung Shan, San Wui and Hok Shan It is now stated that Ju Cheuk-man, who rules Heung Shan, has been, allowed to keep his post as he has remilted" several ten thousands; of dollars" to Canton.
RIVAL ELEMENTS MOVE. Un Tai, a bandit-adventurer general, has sent up a detachment to besiege Shiu Lam, a prosperous silk town, at a junction of the river estuary, but native volunteers and the Merchants' Militia, numbering over a thousand strong, prevented them from entering the town. Later on Admiral Chan Chak despatched a body of troops who drove Un's hordes from their encampment on the river banks. No anti-Sun troops are now in that locality.

JACKIE COOGAN IN "TROUBLE."
Little Jackie Coogan breaks into the plumbing business in his latest picture "Trouble," and an excel lent craftsman he proves himself. Within ten minutes of his. getting on the job, the entire house is flooded, bathtubs overflowing, and the sprinkler system in full blast. Previous to this, the youngster has | distinguished himself as an auctioneer, his most notable feat in this line being the whitewashing of a coloured gentleman with a view to getting him adopted by a
"regular" family
Jackin is indeed in "Trouble" most of the time, but eventually he falls into good hands, and lives happily. Incidentally this film shows him in a new light as a
qualified dramatic actor.
For the rest of the bill, Buster Beaton is responsible-ite a boat this time, with Buster as head ship wright, . designer, and mariner, Knowing Bustar, it is not necesSUTY to add much more, but it might be mentioned that his ocean adven« tures make those of the Ancient Mariner look tame by comparison.
