LECTURE BY COLONEL

DAVY.

At Helena May Institute last evening, Colonel Davy gave an interesting lecture on the "Fairy Land of Fabre. The Rev. J. Kirk

Maconachie was in the chair.

than purely scientific interest; some had a practical hearing on domestic problems. Fabre in- vestigated the habits of bluebottles and other flies which consign their egge to deceased animal matter and thereby purge the earth of death's impurities. He ascertained that the bluebottle always lays her eggs in the slit of the beak or in the eye between the eye and the eye ball-places which would give Fabre was born in a little village the grub easy access to the tissue, In the south of France in the year Fabre found that, if he merely 1823 so, in a small way, the assem-wrapped the head of a dead bird bly (Colonel Davy remaked) might in paper, the flies would not lay regard themselves as celebrating their eggs in the body at all. If the first centenary of his birth. He the body was completely protected seems early to have shown signs of by, say, a paper bag, the result was superior abilities coupled with a

not a putrid corpse but a dried in- thirst for knowledge. Gaining a

offensive mummy, bursary at Avignon he entered the scholastic profession and in early manhood found his true vocation as a naturalist. The successful publication of a number of text books on elementary science and natural history at last set him free from hum drum toll, giving him the means of escape to the fields where he realised the dream of his life. Fabre thus comments. on his freedom ::-

"For forty years I have strug gled against the sordid miseries of life. The wish is realised. It is a little late, my pretty insects! I greatly fear that the peach, is offered to me when I am beginning to have no

1eeth to eat it with."

"It is pleasant to reflect," com mented the lecturer, "that the teeth were spared, notwithstanding, for another 30 or 40 years to enjoy the Luscious fruits of study and observation, during which time ap peared those wonderful Souvenirs Entomologiques' on which Fabre's Fame is securely based.

..

A SKILFUL PEN. "Fabre's methods did not escope criticism from the old-fashioned school of naturalists. Here is an example of the pleasant, whimsical fashion in which he delivers his counter-attack :-

Come here, one and all of you... you the sting-bearers, and you the wing-cased armour clads take up my defence and bear witness in my favour. Tell

not

This was only another illustra- tion of infallible maternal instinct among the insects. It was reason, but instinct, which taught the bluebottle that if she laid her EES on the outside on the paper envelope, the feeble grubs, when hatched, would be quite unable to penetrate it and would perish miserably, though separated only by a thin sheet of paper from their natural larder. The careful house wife would lay the lesson to heart. The joint in the larder or the game sent by post could be completely protected from putrefaction by the simple device of wrapping it up in an old newspaper. Fabre proved

by his experiments that the ordi- dinary meat safe is a snare and a delusion. The flies merely dropped their eggs through the meshes, and the maggots in a few days would convert the succulent joint into a reeking mass of corruption.

By similar means clothes could be protected from the ravages of moths, but the newspaper must be really impervious, with the edges folded double and well pinned.

INSTINCT AND REASON. The actions of insects seemed to imply a marvellous degree of knowledge. That which instinct told the insect was marvellously like that which reason told the human being. But there was a re- verse side. The same insect which confounded us by its knowledge, and wisdom, also disconcerted us with its ignorance and stupidity in

of the intimate terms on which the face of eircumstances outside

Fabre drew a very sharp line between instinct and the reasoning faculty And then, my dear and concluded that there was noth insects, if you cannot convince Ing in all his studies and investiga these good people, I in my turntions to convince him that the in- will say to them: You rip up sects had the slightest glimmering an animal, but I study it alive; of real intelligence. "Can the Insect," he writes, "have acquired its skill gradually, from generation to generation, by a long series of casual experiments, or blind gropings? Can such order be born of chaos, such foresight of hazard, such wisdom of stupidity?
