A CENTURY OF CYCLES.any other school in the world

This year sees the centenary of the bicycle, the first rideable machine having been constructed in 1823. It had wooden wheels and a wooden frame, and was of the iron-tyred type.

The dandy or hobby-horse, the precursor of the modern “bike," is, of course, far older. In the parish church of Stoke Poges, immortalis- ed in Gray's "Elegy," there exists a stained-glass window-known locally as the "bicycle window”--- in an upper panel of which is a man mounted on one of these contri- vances. And below is the date- 1642.

In 1818, a Mr. Dennis Johnson, of 75, Long Acre, a coach-builder; took out a patent for an improved hobby-horse which much resem- bled the old "boaeshaker" bicycle, but minus the pedals. When these were added, five years later, the bicycle proper came into existence. By degrees the bone-shaker, with its two nearly equal wheels, deve loped into what was known as the "ordinary," with a tall front and a small back wheel.

As a machine specially designed for the purpose of committing involuntary suicide, the "ordinary" took a lot of beating. The rider was perched on the exact top of a wheel about five feet high, with an inconsiderable little roller of a

trailing wheel behind, and nothing whatever to hold him up in front.
