FRIENDSHIP.
(Being an essay read to the Chinese Y.M.C.A. English Debat- ing Club).
Gentlemen, have you ever had that experience that when you are at your leisure and have nothing to interest you or occupy your mind, you feel so miserably lonely and crave for someone to talk to? Your desire for someone's com- pany is a proof that you require friends. And have you ever been in some difficulty or been con- fronted with some great problem when you desire for someone's advice to enlighten you what steps you should take? If you have, there is no better advice you should take than that of a friend. From these two, we may understand that a friend is not only a good com-

lonely, you are but alsp a great, helper in your time of distress. What I refer to above are good friends, who know you for what you are and not for what you have. This kind of friend is what we should endeavour to obtain, because he can help you morally, intellectually, and socially.
There is another kind of friend who is harmful to us, and whom we should steer clear of, but some- times it turns out that this kind of friend is the more attractive of the two, and eventually a young man's life is thus wrecked by being associated with him.
An illustration will show you what I mean... When one is lonely. at home, one usually wants some- one's company, and remembering one's friend one naturally goes to pay him a visit. It turns out that one's friend is a bad youth, and' that he is on the point of going to some place where young men ought not to go, and he naturally asksone to accompany him. The young man, I may add, was a good youth and knew that he should not accom- PARI-MUTURL. From that you may easily see that it is very easy for a young man to get acquainted with bad friends, and it is a wise policy that a young man should be very pru- | dent in choosing his friends.
