It is astonishing how common is the belief that English is a difficult! Oct. language, writes Frank Joner in the Daily Chronicle. Over and over again I have been assured by people who have not even

odding acquaintance with any other language that it is the most difficult the world has ever known. I suppose it is the result of the Englishman's fatal fondness for a paradox. And yet when we come to detail English has many claims to the title of the world's eastest language. One of the most im- portant phenomena in language is that language is always tending to improve as a means of expression, This it does both by curtailment and by extension. Useless disting- tions disappear; new ideas or more accurate conception create theirown vocabulary. In the fifteenth cen- tury father did not merely carve. A chicken was frusshed, a rabbit unlaced, a goose reared, a swan lifted, a pracock disjigureda salmon chined, a hadlock sided, solc lained. These words have dis- appeared because they were not wanted.

ITS NATURAL GENDER, In one respect English stands practically alone, and that is in its natural gender. That all males should be masculine, ait females feminine, and all things without life neuter would appear at first sight the most natural thing in the world. And yet in English alone of the great languages of the world does this hold good. Moreover, English has no useless genders, In most languages adjectives arc quite uselessly inflected for gender; in Russian even the verbs. An- other point on which English scores is the simplicity of its verbal system. To write out all the forms of a Latin verb would take possibly Jan. twenty minutes, a Greek verb longer still. In English the only forms of the verb "to love" are love, loves, loved, loving, and lovest. Similarly with Пours, Latin has six cases, Russian six, modern English but two. WORDS WITH SEVERAL MEANINGS.

One of the most persistent į

who find Mar arguments of those difficulty in English is that in many cases A word has! several different meanings. The difficulty of the Frenchman with the word 'box" has been made; Apr.

any other languages are worse than English in this respect. It must be confessed that in one respect English is perhaps the most difficult language in the world'

viz., in its spelting. But for this, Oct. it would have no competitor in the! race for the position of the world language.

HUNT BALL

GRASS, GATES, & HEDGES.

London had a hunt ball when 1,200 hunting people in London tor Horse Show week attended! the "Handley Cross Ball" at the Savoy Hotel, Strand.

There was hunting "pink" in the Strand, and masters of many famous packs passed through the foyer of the hotel during the evening.

STAR THEATRE,

A GOOD PROGRAMME.

In addition to some interesting films, as commented on elsewhere. in this issue of the China Mail, the [J. C. Williamson provide a variety entertainment at the Star beyond the ordinary. Miss Babe Latour, a living statue possuse, gives several her art, and is very examples convincing in the interpretations she affects. They are classical and come in for a great deal of appreciation. Young Eddie Polo skilful trapeze

sume

executes tricks in mid air, and on a dangling rope, and does them all with an ease and confidence that appeal to his audience. Ted. Trevor with his educated dog Duke " also gives a turn which is exceedingly interesting, while Jack and Cora, sing and dance, the lady doing some extraordinary whirls," thanks to the possession of some healthy and firm dental acquisitions. On top of all this J.C. Williams proves that he can sing- he has a good tenor voice, dances, and plays the banjo. Altogether a very fine show which is sure to draw big crowds to-night and to- morrow night.
