Women At Old Bailey.”
The Law Journal condemns the atmosphere of theatricalism' lent to Old Bailey trials by the presence of fashionably-dressed women and considers the presence in the public gallery of persons who have waited all night for ad- mission less reprehensible than the conduct of women in other parts of the Court who listened to unpleasant details of the Faluny ease day after day. This matter concerns City authorities who facilitate the presence of these morbidly-minded women.
"They might consider," says the Lan Journnt, whether the most im-: portant Criminal Court in the country ought to be reduced to the level of a playhouse or cinema,”
"Queer Turns."
How does it feel to be in an earthquake? Here is the impres- sion of an Englishman who in Central America has been accus- tomed to be shocked" on an average once a month "Weird and useanny, that's only how you can express it. When a ship rolls alkait you live a rope or a Stanchion or something to hang on to: and when you are in a mo- tor car that is skidding you have the side tugrasp, and having some- thing to stendy your balance you have still a suse of security. But
in an earthquake the whole cosmos seems to be moving, there is nothing to steady you, the feeling of security goes and it is thon that you get the queer turns." Yet on the whole little damage is done. This Englishman has seen a cathedral with a rift still existing which was made by an earthquake in the seventeenth century. Per contra, in one shock he saw a cor- nice stone fail from the same cathedral and kill a woman on the way to confession.. Japan adjacent to the earthquake belt which runs right across the Pacific, and there is no doubt that this shock is connected with the series of mysterious explosions recently reported in the bed of the Pacific.
Boot-Fitting by X-Ray.
Lord Haldane's favourite doc- trine that science should be the ready handmaiden of business is being pursued in directions little suspected. We have long been familiar with the carefully-adjusted mirrors of the "ready-made" tailor which flatter both customers and clothes. But now some London West End bootmakers have entled in the aid of X-rays. When you buy a pair of boots you fit them on, and then place your feet in the bottom part of a long box which seems to stand on its end. You look through the top part and then see the bones of your feet inside the boots X-rayed. If the boots fit perfectly all the bones lic nice and easy, as in an anatomical plate; if they do not, then it is a case of trying another pair. The instru ment is especially valuable in fitting children. They are apt to declare that boots fit when they really do not. The X-ped-ray, as it is called, gives a final verdict on the point. The ex-Serviceman with whose feet Jerry has been messing about, finds it a great aid. The X-ped-ray has a hatred of rubber, and refuses to act if there. are rubber sules to the footgear. The Boll Weevil.
Reports from America that climatic conditions have been favourable to the activities of the boll weevil, the greatest pest of the cotton fields have been respon- sible for increased pessimism among textile manufacturers. They see the possibility unless the pest is drastically dealt with, of a cotton famine in Lancashire, owing to the increasing demands for raw cotton in the States and in Japan. All the more importance therefore attaches to the experiments carried out in New York, which are said to have resulted in the discovery of a new method of producing calcium nitrate, the only known destroyer of the weevil. Hitherto the price of the chemical has been too prohibitive for general use, but it is now claimed that by next year the available supplies will exceed the 700,000,000 pounds which is the estimated requirement of the cot- ton belts of the south. It is naturally difficult to estimate with any accuracy what the boll weevil costs the United States every year but the figure has been conserva- tively put at 400,000,000 dollars.
