THE WALLED-IN NUN. "NOTICE TO SHIPPRRS AND
STORY GHOST
PASSENGERS.
(01ECTED DEPARTURE,
DEVON
Newton Abbot-A remarkable ghost story is arousing curiosity here, the scene being laid at Ford House, built in Queen Elibabeth's time. Locally, a legend about a nun walled in alive has always oot. been associated with the place, and a coffin-shaped" projection in the wall is pointed out to visitors as the spot. The house is owned by the Earl of Devon, and is tenanted by his sister, Lady Amy Bertie, and her husband, Colonel the Hon, Reginald Bertie. During their absence on hold ty, Mrs. Saunders, a prominent loral resident, and a descendant of Sir Richard Reynell, the ancient builder of the house, is staying there with her son.

During the night Mrs. Saunders was sleeping in the room where William of Orange spent his first night in England, and she was awakened by sounds of heavy foot- steps hurrying along the passage and downstairs. Thinking her son Oct. was unwell, but wondering why he wore boots, Mrs, Saunders switched on the light and awaited his retorn Oct. Dozing-off, she was again.awaken ed by rushing footsteps, unmistak ably footsteps, of a heavily hooted man in a great hurry, making the stairs creak loudly. Calling her son's name and receiving no reply, she went into his bed-romm ad- joining and found him sleeping peacefully. The door, which she ind carefully closed the previous evening, was now wide open. Next morning Mrs. Saunders asked her Son if he had slept well, and he re- plied that three times he had Awakened to find histoor open, and had risen to shut it.
Mrs. Saunders stated that she had found it was quite impossible to open the door without turning the handle. That morning one of the maids askeri her if she or her son had been ill, as she had heard Someone moving about. Mrs. Saunders is convinced that the legend is true and that the foot, steps she heard were those of aj man chasing the sun, who was
liding along noiselessly.

delivering judgment the President, who described the act as "despic- able, childish, foolish, and above all grossly insulting to the British nation and the Flag which is their emiliem," said the offence deserved a long term of imprisonment, fol- lowed by expulsion, and such a sentence he would ordinarily have passed.

He has asked me, on account of the great regard he has for France and on account of the friendly relations be and the British Army have always enjoyed with the French Commander-in-Chief and the French army, to take a lenient" view of your case, and issue a ́ severe warning to you and not to punish you as you deserve.
