DERELICT MANSION,

UNTENANTED FOR TEN

YEARS.

In a fashionable part of Kensing ton there is a house containing cost- ly furniture which has not been. occupied for ten years, but la re- spect of which the owner pays nearly £200 yearly as rates. The house is of six floors, and has a large number of rooms. Those on the ground floor at least are furnished in expensive style, but the house It- self is in an almost derelict condi tion. The windows are covered with a thick layer of dust, which has also settled heavily on the walls and doors. The front entrance is guarded by rusting iron gaten, while the area gateway is heavily pad- locked.

The owner of the house is a widow of considerable means, who spends most of her tine abroad. The presence of the furniture in the house. is considered to be "occupation" for the purposes of rating, and the rates are paid re- !gularly through a City bank. Though in a poor state of repair, the house is not in a condition which would justify action by the local sanitary authority.

-A West-end estate agent, who has large dealings with houses in Kensington, said that it was no uncommon thing for a house full of furniture to be deserted for years. "I know of half a dozen myself," he said. "The owners are people who have nothing to detalo them in London, and so they lead a roving life. When they return there is a great deal of cleaning and painting and polish- ing, and the houses soon resume their normal appearance. 1. have never before known a house to be deserted for ten years." The only explanation that could be offered was that the house contained many family treasures and mementoes of dead relations, bringing back Much has painful memo.ies, been written about rooins which are kept sacred and deserted," said the agent, "and my experience teaches me that the practice is much more general than is popularly supposed."

BEER:

LORD DAWSON ON A MODERN NECESSITY.

Lord Dawson of Penn, the dis- tinguished physician, paid a notabe tribute to the value of alcohol in a speech in the House of Lords dut- ing the discussion of Lady Astor's Bill to prohibit the sale of intoxicat- ing liquors in public-houses to young persons under 18...

Lord Dawson said under the conditions of modern civilisation in these days of concentratidis and of constant endeavour to crowd.12 hours into 6 with a high measure of specialisation, it was obvious that at the end of the day the mind of a man got into one track. He had no, uplift: "There alcohol comes in very well," said Lord Dawson, Alcohol in moderation gets that man aut, of the track. It lirens his mental tonch.

using precisely the same cells of the brain. Is it to be. wondered that at the end of the day his brain is in one track? Good beer at that particular time of day would help et des him, not harm him.

"Not long ago I happened to be at a public dinner where the centre table consisted entirely of Pro hibitionists, many of them high ecclesiastics. It was very interest- ing to watch them. OBITUARY.

CAPTAIN H. E. MORTON.

Cable advices have been re- ceived in Shanghal to the effect that Captain H. E. Morton, who was for many years the popular managing director of the Astor House, passed away 1, Manila on September 29. No deß rite inför mation has been ceived as the cause of his death, but it is thought that the old infection on his injur ed hand for which he had been taking treatment, even going so far as to have new portions of bones grafted in must as have resulted in blood poisoning. Captain Morton, who was born in Ireland 53 yeats dc had a long and varied career in the Orient and Shanghai, which port he visit ed many times before making his residence there. It will be remen- bered that for many years he had command of the old Pelic Mail str. 'Mongolia," plying Between San Francisco and Astatio ports, while before siat time he was an officer upon an old clipper on the Atlantic Coast. He became an American citizen by choice, upon resigning from that berth. Before accepting the position with the Shangnai Hotels Co., he was the senior partner of the Rem. of. Morton and
