IMPERIAL ECONOMIC CONFERENCE
31923
日三十八次講年二十國典事中,
NEW YORK TO LONDON
TWO-DAY MAIL SERVICE.
OPENING SESSION HELD.
(Reuter's Service to the China Mail.)
LONDON, October 2 TheImperial Economic Conference opened at the Cabinet offices in Whitehall and adjourned Thursday after a two-hour sitting. Sir.P. Lloyd Greame this opening speech briefly reviewed the economic situation and the tasks of the conference. Mr. Mackenzie King, Mr. Massey, General Sisuts? and Meiers McGrath, Warren, Innes and Ormsby Gore made speeches in reply.
DEVELOPING EMPIRE TRADE.
LATER. Dealing with imperial preference in his speech at the opening of the economic conference Sir Phillip Lloyd Greante said that any increase the dominions were able to make in the rate of prefer- ence would be of real value. Britain had already established the principle in her own more limited, fiscal systen and would certainly approach the question with a strong desire to increase mutual trade. She was ready and willing to take what action was possible ta secure that end. Sir Phillip Greame dwelt on the urgency of Britain developing new markets overseas. The conference, he said, must work out a scheme for credit facilities and financial | cooperation with a view to accelerating the rtevelopment of the Empire at the time of our greatest need. He concluded by suggesting the -establishment of an advisory body to discuss matters arising out of the decisions of the conference and action to give effect thereto.
