After Signor Salandra's pronouncement M. Politis explained the Greek case in an able speech which appeared favourably to impress the public without evoking a demonstration. M. Politis repudi- ated the suggestion that Greece desired to escape her responsibilities and said she urgently required an international enquiry in order to throw the fullest light on the affair. She was ready to abide by the consquences of the enquiry. The seizure of pledges was unnecessary as both parties were members of the League. Lord Robert Cecil, at whose insistence to-day's proceedings were held in public, urged the Council to give a decision to-morrow to enable him to inform the Assembly immediately. AMBASSADORS' CONFERENCE DECISION.

The Conference of Ambassadors took formal note of Greece's readiness to pay reparations deter mined by the Conference and her proposal for a Commission of Enquiry of three powers represent- ed on the delimitation commission, The Conference, recognising that the responsibility of States for pol itical crimes in their territory is the principle of in- ternational law, will immediately consider details of the proposed enquiry. This decision has been com municated to the League of Nations.
