THE

METALS FOR JAPAN.

RESULT OF DISASTER.

wwwwwww.damny

Although matters are too serious to view things in a flippant light, it is Interesting to mention that the calamity in Japan has resulted in considerable metal purchases in the Colony for urgent needs in the de- vastated areas. Several lines were in keen demand and the natural sequel was an upshot in prices,

Corrugated Sheets-10 x 3" corr., 24 to 26G. were sold at between 16 and 18 cents (Hongkong currency) godown for immediate clearance,

Plain Galvanised Sheets-3 × 7, 30G, fetched 134 cents per lb. on the same ternis.

Wire Nails-I" size were also in amounts demand, considerable changing hands at $11.50 per picul keg.

It is stated that all purchases in these three lines were for account" of Japanese hongs who were ship- ping them away to Japan as soon as freight is available.

· BELLEROPHON" "PERSEUS " LONDON, Sep. 3. Dealing with the increased im ports of China tea, which for the three months ending August 31st were double those for the same period of last year, the Daily Tele- graph's city editor issues a warning that the closest scrutiny is necess- ary before buying tea shares for in-

vestment.

He says that while abnormal prices will probably be maintained during the prescat season, there are indications that the high retail prices will place a considerable check on consumption and he is of the opinion that China, for the pre- sent will be able, notwithstanding preference, to supply many mil- lions of pounds of good tea at lower prices than those quoted for Indian and Ceylon teas, but shares which are at present yielding ten per cent. would only retura from two to three per cent. upon a return to normal markets:-Reuter.

Messrs, James F. Hutton and Co., Ltd., Manchester, reported as follows on Wed 1esday August

Reports on the growing Ameri- can cotton crop have again been more favourable, the weather con- ditions having improved consider. ably and forecasts of the probable yield have steadily risen again in consequence. Owing to this the extreme bullishness of the Ameri can market has received a definite check, for the prescat at least. Growers have indulged in fairly free hedge selling and this, together with the unfavourable political and

economic siturliva in Europe has created Some anxiety amongst speculators who have also sold heavily. The result has been that values have dropped sharply and, as general sentimient for the time being appears to favour lower values, it looks as though the decline could only be arrested by some unfavourable crop news.
