ANNOUNCEMENT.

WING to the receipt of numerous complaints from patrons as to the incivility of various members of the Staff of the Hotels under the Management of this Company in Hongkong, such complaints being to the effect that "Cash" has been demanded io satisfaction of Liquors supplied, al patrons thereby inconvenienced by not being allowed to sign "chita," we beg to draw the attention of our clientele to the terms of the Liquora Ordinance, 1917, an extract from which is hereby given :--

2. In this Ordinanco.

(a) "Cash" means any coins or notes current in the Colony. (b) Sale" includes any transaction in which intoxicating liquor is supplied for any consideration whatsoever, direct or indirect.

8. (1) Subject to the ovisions of sub-section (2) of this section, na person shall sell any intoxicating liquor for consumption on or at any licensed premises except for cash.

(2) Sub-section (1) of this section shall not apply to the following:-- (a) any sale by the proprietor of an hotel to a person residing at

the hotel;

(b) any sale by the proprietor of an hotel of liquor to be consumed in the dining room of the hotel at one of the regular meals of the hotel or of liquor to be consumed in conjunction with any other bona fide meal for which a charge of at least thirty conte can be reasonably made;

(e) any mie in accordance with the candi ions of his licence by

the holder of a restaurant adjunct licence.

4. Where any intoxicating liquor is sold by a servant or employes in contravention of section 3 of this Ordinance the employer, whether a natural person or a body corporato, shall be deemed to be guilty of on offence against this Ordinance anlass he provos affirmatively that the a'c was against his expross orders and without his contest or connivanco.

The Articles of Association provide that the qualification of a Member of the Consulting Committee is to be the holding of at least 300 aliares in the Company, and that renmneration of the Members of the Consulting Committee slull be thę sum of $5,000 per aunum to be divided among them according to the number of attendances by them at the Meetings of such Committee.

At the invitation of the Canadian Government the British Forestry Conference will be held in Canada from 25th July to 7th September. This Conference forms a sequel to the Conference convened in Lon- don in 1920 at the instance of the. Forestry Commissioners.

The paper industry in Canada continues to expand in keeping with the demand for high grade papers and sulphite pulp. The Provincial Paper Milis (Ltd.) have opened up a new plant at Port Arthur which is one of the most modern paper-making plants in Canada.

Lieut.-Col Lawrie Oppenheim, who was formerly British Military Attaché at Berne, and also acted as military representative to the Permanent Advisory Commission of the League of Nations, has been killed while mountaineering in Savoy (says a Reuter message from París.)
