SOME STRANGE LIBEL ALLEGATIONS

"

The hearing of an action for alleged libel brought by Lord Alfred Douglas against the Morning Post began in the King's Bench Division, London, on Tuesday, before Mr. Justice Salter and a special jury.

The words the plaintiff com- plains of appeared in the issue of the journal for April 26, 1922, and

It must no longer be a paying proposition to men like Mr. T. W. H. Crosland and Lord Alfred Douglas to invent vile insults against the Jews. The defendants pleaded that the words were true fi substance and fact, and were fair and bona-fide comments on a matter of public interest.

Mr. Grieve said that in New South Wales 60 per cent. was allocated to the winning horse and 20 per cent. each to the second and third. For the year ended June 30, 1922, the Government of New South Wales, with a total population of 2,000,000, received from betting £650,000.

On the question of cost, Mr. Grieve said that a totalisator machine capable of dealing with 24 horses would cost £15,000 or £20,000.

Mr. Grieve mentioned that a totalisator machine had been set up recently at a private credit betting club in High Holborn,

KITCHENER'S DEATH, Counsel asked if the reference to the death of Lord Kitchener in his article," that brave statement sealed his death" meant that Jews caused the death of Lord Kitchener. "Certainly," replied Lord Alfred.

What information had you to en- able you to charge the Jewish race with the murder of Lord Kitchener? -I did not go to that length at the time. DIVORCE EQUALITY,

BILL SUPPORTED BY THE PRIMATE.

The Bill (introduced to Parlia ment by Mr. Entwistle) to give women the right to divorce their husbands on the sole ground of adultery was given a second read- ing in the House of Lords by 95 votes to 8, the Archbishop of Can- terbury being among those sup porting it.

The Bill has already passed the House of Commons by a substantial majority.

Lord Buckmaster, who moved the second reading, pointed out. that there was no extension of the grounds of divorce, the only object of the Bill being to place men and women on an equality before the law. He urged that no attempt should be made to expand this Bilt into one of giving divorce on grounds of insanity or drunkenness or other causes; in that case the Bill would run the risk of being wreck- ed.

"People say I am obsessed by this subject," he remarked, in al- luding to grievances still left un- touched. "I admit I am obsessed by the injustice and the wrong that our laws do to many anoffending people, and I am obsessed by the belief that the laws we enforce have not the sanction of God and offund the justice of man."

Lord Braye moved the rejection of the Bill. Others described this legislation as a forward step," but he denounced it as a downward step, and warɔoed the House of the results of casy divorce in America. where, he said, it had resulted in camouflaged polygamy and polyandry.

WEALTHY WIVES.

Lord Birkenhead, supporting the, Bill, commented on a suggestion by Lord Braye that a vicious wo- man might suggest to her husband that he should commit adultery in order that she might obtain a divorce. It is extremely unlikely that a man who had not been guilty of adultery before would vary his moral habits for the purpose of providing her with facilities for divorce," he remarked.

In suggesting minor modifica- tions of the Bill, Lord Birken- head argued that power ought to be given to the courts to grant alimony to a husband whose wife had been unfaithful to hin "if the husband has married a wealthy wife under the belief that on the condition of his good be- haviour he has provided for him- self for life." (Laughter.)

The Archbishop of Canterbury said as the Bill provided for divorce on the ground of adultery, and nothing else, he would support it, believing that the law of God had laid it down that there was no vital Teething children have more or less distinction in the obligations of diarrhoea, which can be controlled by morality upon men and women giving 'Chamberlain's Colic and although the law of the land did at
