MEMORY OF TWENTY

YEARS AGO.

Francesco Di Pretoro tells 118, in the Popolo D'Italia, of a visit he paid to the sleepy little town of Gualtiere in Reggio Emilia, which is like entering a remote world of Mussolini records. Memories of the Bentivoglio family fade before them in the minds of the people to-day, who are proud to have pro- v'ded one year of peace (even if al little stagnant) to the man who now holds the destinies of Italy in his hands. Mussolini taught in a Government school in an out- Flying district, and many of the inhabitants remember how he would stride rapidly across the fields, back to Gualtiere direct- ly lessons were over, catch up his gun and be off in search of game, accompanied by some peasants or worknien. He would climb the poplartrees and touch the heights, laughing gally with his humble friends. But more often he was silent, buried in books and news- papers far into the night. The ambitious young schoolmaster, who felt life and talent surging within him, must have laughed somewhat ironically when he remembered that Gualtiere, with a salary of 700 hire a year, was a step up in his pro- fession.

The day came when Mussolini revealed himself to the people, who only dimly realised his re- markable qualifies of mind and character. One June day there was to be a commemoration to Garibaldi, and the townspeople and all the countryside trooped into the piazza to hear a great oration, but they could only gape impatiently at his statue, for no orator arrived. Some- onc thought of the young schoolmaster who used to make his scholars sing the

"Inno

di Mamell," the poet of '48. They found him sitting in his shirt- sleeves at the Osteria della Fratel- lanza; quite simply he accepted the invitation to fill the gap, and, with his coat over his arm, mounted the platform as calmly as though he had been the official orator. The people.
