A China Mail reporter was

old horse-og. 18.-O. N told to-day that

Shantung shoes are sought in where the larger ones are slightly. opened giving them the appearance of srythes. One edge is sharpen- ed in a very crude process and then they are sold as scythes to the farmers. The smaller ones are resorted and thuse that can be used are shoed on to the hardy Northern mules.

RICE SHIPMENTS TO THE NORTH.

A far volume of business in rice for Northern ports has been done recently although the recent improvement in prices in the last ten days have put a slight check to further buying. It has been stated that buyers for Tientsin principals are still in the market for other lots which they need not ship away till shortly before the port is frozen over. Meanwhite they await a favourable opportunity to get into the market.

of the old company. The business in China had already, with the full approval of the directors of the new English company, been recon- stituted under the name of Holy- oak, Massey and Company, Ltd. CRICKET.

GETTING READY FOR THE SEASON.

The China Mail learns that the annual meeting of the Cricket League will probably be held next mo: th. Meanwhile, It is stated. Mr. H. Owen Hughes of the H.K.C.G. who is honorary secretary and treasurer of the league, and Mr. J. P. Robinson of the K.C.C., are jolitly making Iterations in the league rules for submission to the annual meeting.

It is significant to note that. the batting and howling averages published in the China Mail lust season are to be included in the records. Hitherto, the league has not taken note of the averages,

Most of last year's stalwarts are still with us afthougii-a-few, well known nanies will be missing for the better past of the season. How ever, it is as yet too early to make any predictions as to the coming season's prospects.
