More than one speaker at the annual meeting of the Alice Memorial and Affiliated Hospitals held in the Chamber of Commerce Board Room to-day emphasised the urgent need of more financial help to enable the invaluable work of the institutions to be continued and extended into still wider spheres of usefulness.
Mr. P. H. Holyoak presided and there were also present the Hon. Mr. E. R. Hallifax (Secretary for Chinese Affairs), the Hon. Mr. H. E. Pollock K.C., the Rev. Dr. T. W. Pearce and Messrs. W. B, Walker, H. Greenwood, A. E. Wright, P. A. Cox, Cheung Chik-ling, Mok Kon- shing, S. W. Tso and J. M. Wong.

WING to the receipt of numerous complaints from patrons as to the incivility of various members of the Staff of the Hotela under the Management of this Company in Hongkong, auch complaints being to the effect that "Cash" has been demanded in satisfaction of Liquors supplied, and patrone thereby inconvenienced by not being allowed to sign "chita," we beg to draw the attention of our clientele to the terms of the Liquors Urdinance, 1917, an extract from which is hereby given :—
2. In this Onlinance.--
fa) "Ciak" means any coins or notes current in the Colony, (b) Sale" includes any transaction in which intoxicating liquor is supplied for any consideration whatsoever, direct or indirect.
3. (1) Subject to the provisious of sib-section (2) of this section, no person ball sell ang intoxicating liquor for consumption on or at any licensed premises except for raib.
(2) Sub-section (1) of this section shall not apply to the following:
(a) any sale by the proprietor of an hotel to a person residing_at
the hotel;
(b) any sale by the proprietor of an hotel of liquor to be consumed in the dining room of the hotel at one of the regular meals of the hotel or of liquor to be consumed in conjunction with any other bona fide meal for which a charge of at least thirty cents can be reasonably made;
(c) any sale in accordance with, the conditions of his licences by
the balder of a restaurant adjunct licence.
4. Where any intoxicating liquor is sold by a servant or employee in
contravention of section 3 of this Ordinance the employer, whether a natural persón or a body corporate, shall be deemed to be guilty of an offence againn this Urdinance unless be proves affirmatively that the said was against his express orders and without bis consent or connivance
5. Every person to whom any liquor in, to the knowledge of such person, supplied in contravention of this Ordin- ance shall also be guilty of an offence against this Ordinance.
