GERMANY.
BERLIN, August 7. The industrial and commercial banks are placing at the disposal of the Reichsbank foreign currency to the value of 50,000 gold marks, against dollar treasury bills. Thus, the dollar loan will be completely subscribed. The proceeds are to be devoted chiefly to the purchase of foodstuffs and fats.
At a meeting of the Reichstag the party leaders endorsed the Government's plans to check for ther inflation by vigorous taxation and internal loans.
The Minister of Economics, Dr. Becker, interviewed by Renter's. denied that the Government in tended to abandon the paper mark as currency.
MUTUAL QUARANTER PACT.
PARIS, August 7. A temporary mixed commission of the League of Nations has ap proved of the draft of a mutual guarantee pact.
The preamble says that security which must be the first condition of disarmament, will be attained by a general guarantee treaty, reinfor- private ced by supplementary agreements.

SWAN ATTACKS DOG.
HASTY RETREAT OF SWIMMING SPANIEL
An instance of the fighting dis- position of the swan, especially, when accompanied by its young, was seen at Ferry Bridge, Burton- on-Trent. A fair-sized spaniel was swimming in the river when a pair of swans out with their cygnets re- sented his presence. The male bird gave the dog a vicious blow on the head with its beak, and as the spaniel bowled and swam away he was closely and vigorously pursued with blows and attempted blows to the bank, up which he bolted. At one time it seemed as though the dog was going to be held under the water and drowned.

President Coolidge paid his respects to the dead as the coffin reached the head of the line of soldiers drawn up in front of the President's rooni.
The coffin was enshrouded with the U.S. flag, borne to the Plaza and placed on a caisson drawn by six bay horses, when the procession, escorted by the troops, started for White House.
As
the cortège passed the Capitol, the great dome, whose lights had been extinguished, stood out against the moonless sky as if in mourning.
