HONGKONG NOTES AND
COMMENT.
INTEREST IN MITALS,
The sine stendly tone that has been prevalent during the last few days is still in evidence in the local metals market but there is one dis- quicting feature which is the lack of business' on a large scile and corresponding clearances. It seeme un though holders of goods have munde up their minds that as it will cost them more to replace their stocks and as prices are going up, elsewhere they would rither hang on longer than sell at a sacrifice. However, there is an under-current of genuino activity and had it not been for the unsettled conditions up-country and the delays caused by obstacles to shipping, a fairly large volume of business would have been recorded. On the whole. prices and the tone of the market compare favourably, with the two PORTUGUESE.previous weeks.

Mr. Davidson, who represented the defendants, said he had no instructions to consent.
The Fuisne Judge said that what he proposed to do was to add the wife's name 10 the writ and to make a small award for injuries and pain and suffering. If the wife was not joined now she could sue next week.
Mr. Davidson: I have not quite grasped yet what your Lordship has decided on the point of law.
The Paisne Judge: What I have decided on the point of law is that a husband can sue for medical ex- penses for his wife.
The Puisne Judgd quoted the case of Beasley v. Roney, on which he based his decision.
Mr. Davidson observed that the cake was not quoted at the hearing. The Puisne Judge: It is not my fault if the parties do not give me the case. It is cited in two re ference books and I find that it is good law..
Mr Davidson: This case has been fought on the ground that a husband cannot sue for injuries to his wife!
The Puisne Judge: I find that the husband can sue for his expenses and I propose to save you being sted again by the wife.
Mr. Davidson: My instructions were to object to the action as it was originally framed and I have no instructions to consent to any alteration. I do not know quite where we stand.
The Puisne Judge! I will tell you where you stand. Your objec tion has been overruled. I find that the husband can sue. It is quite true that a wife can sue for personal injuries, but I say the husband is quite right in suing for expenses
incurred.
Mr. Davidson: If your Lordship decides that I do not see why you should not give judgment on the claim as it stands.
In that case Igive plaintiff for loss of wages, $20; medical expenses, $21; clothing, $15; furniture, $10; wife's medical expenses (to include future expenses, $100.00; suffering $50; making a total of $216.00,
