BLUDGER BILL."
SUPERSWINDLER'S LIFE STORY.
William Warren, who was ar rested in Paris while driving into the city in a luxuriously appointed motor car, the cushions of which were stuffed with bank-notes of the value of £20,000, is one of tho best known confidence tricksters in the world.
He left London for the Continent in the spring of 1921 and has not been back since. The reason for his departure was that one of his victims, Mr. Archibald James Wall; a merchant carrying on business in Portugal and England, succeeded in the High Court in obtaining judgment for £15,000: which Warren had induced him to part with by telling him what enormous wealth could be made out of the safe Investment system of horse racing. The court decided that Warren” had' obtained the money by fraud, and "Bludger
!
"He is known to the police of many countries as "Bludger Bill," Bill" fied the country. and his reputation as a swindler. extends to many European count THE INFALLIBLE CHARM ries as well as to Australia ‹and- New Zealand..
His exploits both in England and all over the Continent read like romantic fiction. His most successful bait was what is called the safe investment betting system, by means of which so he told his dupes, it was impossible to lose; Anime
This super-swindler was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, and came to England twenty-two years ago. He was leeducated and uncouth, and yet he managed to mix in what is called good society.
"Gan I see the lady of the houso??? inquired an enterprising pedlar.
"Well, yes, you can-if you ain't blind snapped the woman who answered the bell.
•
"Oh,I beg pardon,, mum. You em the lady of the house, then "
"Yes, I am I-What d’yer take me for? Did yer think I was the gentle. man of the house, or the next door neighbour, or one of the farm labourers, or the cat
"I didn't know, mum, but ye might be the youngest daughter" A A Oh, didn't yer? Well, that was natʼral, too," replied the lady of the house. What d'ye want
Then the pedlar displayed his wares And when he left, his face was full of pleasure. He under stood munad future.
He stayed at the best hotels his personal expenses were at one time £100 a day and he also had a flat in Kensington with Louls Quinze furniture and servants in
very.
