Children's Fears.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Lecturing on "The Psychology of the Child" at the headquarters of the National Society of Day Nurseries Dr. Elizabeth Sloan Chesser said children were often the victims of hereditary fears which could be traced definitely to primeval ancestors. Punishment and ridicule because of such fears were wrong. The correct course was to strengthen the physique and the nerves. Children who lacked self-assurance often derived gmat benefit from being put to play with those younger than themselves.. Biggest-Dividend.

Eath Perfume.

A delightful compound to soften and perfume the bath water can be made in this way? Mix in the pro- portion stated. the following ingredients-Fine oatmeal 5 parts, powdered orris root I part, almond meal I part, and half a part of dry Castile soap scraped to a powder. The mixture should be put into little bags made of cheesecloth or similar material, which has been cift in squares of about 4in. Move the bag about freely in the water before entering the bath, and the water will be delightfully soft and fragrant.

Perhaps the happiest man who ever received a letter from an editor with "Returned With Thanks," was an Englishman out in China, who learnt Chinese. and wrote a story in Chinese. He was so mightily pleased with himself that he sent it to the editor of a Chinese magazine. The editor returned it, but softened the blow by a long and very flowery communication to the effect that the work was of such a high standard that he dared not publish it, as not only would his readers, but his Imperial master expect work of a similar high stand- ard to appear for ever more in his paper, and he would be unable to supply it. Perhaps the wily

Chinese was a diplomat, for I have been told that in China it is the custom to boil alive any editor who is inclined to be fractious. Costly Cricket.

What becomes of all the money that is taken at the turnstiles of a county cricket club ground? First of all there is the pay of the profes- sional members of the team to be considered. This is now a big item, for in many of the first-class clubs only a few of the players in important matches are of amateur standing. In the case of the Surrey Club, for instance, the amount paid to professionals last season totalled in all to over £3,500. That sum did not go entirely to members of the eleven, of course; it included the regular pay of various members of the ground staff. As a rule the professional members of a county team receive about £12 for each

Mr. F. Derwent Wood, R.A., sculptor, said:

The creator of a design should get credit for it just as the owner of a Derby winner has his name associat ed with it, or a man who shoots two goals in a football match is credited with the performance.

Mr. W. Reid Dick, A.R.A., an- other sculptor, said that it was an accepted thing for sculptors to sign their works, and pointed out that Michael Angelo did so.
