THE

INCREASE IN MOTOR TONNAGE.

In our April Issue we were able to publish, the fact that in the previous month 14. motor ships, totalling 117,000 tons gross, had

been ordered, against 11 steamers

of 27,600 tons gross says the June Motor Ship, In May, in publishing Lloyd's Shipbuilding Returns, it was shown that, during the first quarter of the year there had been decrease in the tonnage of steamers under construction and an increase in that of motor vessels.

In this issue we give dotails of contracts which have just been arranged for the construction of 13. oil-engined craft of 96,500 tons deadweight, which, we believe, re- | presents a higher tonnage than that of steamers ordered during the same period. Incidentally, in connection with the numerous orders which have been concluded, it is once again satisfactory to re- cord that most of them have been allocated to British yards, for

The real proof of the motor vessel in comparison with the steamer is seen in the policy of shipowers who have gained ex- perience with both classes. If, after this experience has been obtained, the new vessels are in- variably motor ships, even the most. conservative shipowner or shipbuil- der cannot cavil at the statement. that the oil-engined vessel is .com- micrcially the more economical, and that it will ultimately replace
