This expansion, however, was due more to replacements and small additions than to new mili constriction, War conditions were all against new mill building, and such increase in manufacturing: capacity as was necessitated by the exceptionally heavy
demand for wool textiles was met by replacing old or partly-word machines by more modern types capable of better and larger pro- duction. It has been computed that the net increase in manufactur- ing capacity of these changes is round about-equal to making good the loss due to the reduction, of hours from 5554 to 48 per week.

The hosiery or knitting industry has been probably the most favoured of the textile industries hoth during and since the war, and considerable increase in manufac turing equipment has been neces-. sary to keep pace with the demand for knitted articles.. No precise figures are available as to the ex- tent of the increase, though there is every reason to believe that some of the prosperity of the knitting industry has been at the expense of the weaving branch, owing to the increasing use of knitted fabric for garments previously made of woven cloth.
The relatively new industry of artificial silk manufacturing has grown with exceeding rapidity since 1913. The demand for this product is continuously increasing, and although manufacturing cap- acity has been more than doubled even during the last two years, it is still unable to satisfy the demand.
