This suggestion from a Londons railway porter to a sea captain whó- had missed his train led to a thril ling and successful dash across the North Sea in dirty weather, saving the captain's job, and probably preventing his career from being ruined.

The captain unexpectedly had tự put his vessel into a, North Sea. Continental port to take in a cargo, and as he thought this would oor cupy four days he seized the opportunity to visit his wife, who was seriously ill. in London. After two days in London he received a telegram from the first mato that the ship was ready to sall and another.ont informing him that the owners. know of his absence und werd going to order the ship to sea that night.

Then he made a dash for the train. He missed it, but taking the porter's advice, he quickly learned that he could get an aero- plane at once on payment of 2 mile for his trip and the return journey, about £40 in all..

"My job is worth that any day," he said. "Fix the matter up."

A few moments later he was speeding in a motor-car to the Stag-lane Aerodrome, Edgware, and thence without delay through the air in a de Havilland machine at 100 miles an hour towards his destination.

With watch in hand, the captai urged the pilot, Mr. Alan L Cobham, to greater speed, and he, in spite of the rain and wind, raced forward.

On landing, the captain left for the docks in a waiting motor-car, and put his ship to sea two hours before the time at which he ha been instructed to sail,
