NEW THATCH SIR?

GIANT PEARL

£12,000 AUSTRALIAN GÉM.

The chief pearling inspector of ;. West Australia

the reports discovery of a pearl of 102 grains, of double-button shape, at Broome,

It is valued at £12,000.

The new pearl thus surpasses the famous stone, Star of the West," which weighed 101 grains, and was valued at £10,000.

Hatton-garden experts; stated that, although a pearl of 102 grains (about 4oz.) is of exceptional size, It is not unique. One firm stated that they recently had in their hands a pearl of 150 grains. The double-button shape of the Broom- "find" is, however, very unusual. The average size of the pearls that daily pass through the market, it was stated, is about 30 grains.

In March of this year a single drop pearl of 100 grains fetched £6,400 at Christie's,
