BOTTOMLEY WRITES HOME. 95-YEARS-OLD CLERGYMAN'S
The following letter has been sent from prison by Horatio Bot- tomley to his wife and daughter: No. 1779. Name, H. Bottomley,
Wormwood Scrubbs Prison, London, W. 12,
Dears, Beginning man-like about myself, I cannot this time give a very good report. No appetite and no sleep make a bid combination, especially when aggravated by a variety of painful nerve disorders. The loss of
wight, which has been consider able, may not necessarily be serious, provided the process is checked in time. But the isomnia, I confess, does cause me some anxiety and at times I am afraid same depression. But I fight it as best I can. I think I have had every narcotic in the British phar nacopoeia and out of it, but, you see, the surgery here, wonder ful as it is, contains nothing label led Pax vobiscum! I suppose the
chaplain would say that only one physician prescribes and dispenses
that!
Well, I have been here just on a year as a matter of fact according to the official scale well over a year rotting away a big slice out of the remaining portion of my life that counts. Of course, I am com forted by the wonderful messages of sympathy and hope you have re- ceived from all quarters-from the dear old bishop down to those poor, humble folk who are good nough to remember the Bttle things I did for them and theirs during and after the war.
OPINION.
Ope of the oldest clergymen on the active list of the Church of Eng. land, the Rev. Denham Rowe Nor- man, Master of St. John's Hos pital, Lichfield, is 95 to-day. He was ordained 68 years ago and re- ceived bis present appont-t 20 years ago, after having been for 23 years rector of Stafford. He is still preaching every Sunday.
Mr. Rowe, who looks and says that he feels as bule and hearty a he did 20 years ago, declared to a Daily Mail reporter that in his opinion lengthy services are among the primary reasons for decrease in church attendance.
"Brain work is far more stremi- ous to-day than it was in my younger days," he declared. "The result is that people require relaxa- tion on one day in the week; so the tendency is to spend Sunday in Te-
reation."
CURIOUS FIND. WHAT SINGAPORE DREDGER

An interesting find has been made by the Sitempore Harbour "Shrimo during Board dredger operations on a shoal off the main wharves at Tanjong Pagar.
